Why is branding important?

Brand design is one of the most essential parts when it comes to developing a successful business. Good branding allows for differentiation and personalization through distinct and consistent visual elements. Think of it as the clothes you wear, the hairstyle you have, the way you speak. Branding provides an image that aligns with and creates your business’ personality so your ideal customers would be able to recognize it and be identified with it.

Branding is not only having a pretty logo, it is much more. Colors that represent emotions, typographies that showcase personality, language and tone that should be used across all the communication channels, visual elements that add recognition… All of this put together inside a brandbook to serve as a guide to have a consistent image that will help your business build a strong customer base, choosing you before your competitors.

What is branding?

Branding is the most complete graphic design service, which is meant to create the visual image of a specific business, giving it differentiating characteristics that would provide the personality potential customers would be able to recognize. Every business should have a strong brand image to successfully communicate with their clients while having that look imprinted into their minds, creating an invisible mark within them that will have them go back to your business time and time again.

How does branding work?

Let’s answer that important question with a case study: the development of Dra. Work Kloset’s brand, a fashion ecommerce for professional, elegant women working in healthcare.

Ivory

Champagne

Goldenrod

Sapphire

The first thing we need to do is define the business. That definition is not only what the company sells or offers, it is much more. Of course that is important, but depending on how we define its character, we will speak to a different type of customer. Dra. Work Kloset had it very clear: the product was medical wear for women working as doctors or nurses who were looking to add elegance and differentiate themselves through out-of-the-norm uniforms.

Now that we have defined the business and its purpose, we need to make sure our visual elements align with those our desired client looks for. In order to do that, I usually pick three personality traits as if the company was a person. Well, behind every business there are people working so technically it is a person. For Dra. Work Kloset those were:

ELEGANCE

FEMININITY

SOPHISTICATION

Once we had our personality traits chosen, it was time to work on the visual elements that best represented the brand for an iconic logo and image. We wanted colors that represented the union between luxury and the feminine while keeping a clean, minimalist look. The final color palette was Ivory white, Champagne Pink, Goldenrod and Blue Sapphire.

The logo style the company owner decided on was an emblem, a symbol including the name’s initials DWK. As the brand name itself was long enough, it was a great solution that reminded of well-known luxury brands like Louis Vuitton. It was time to find a way to integrate them together into a logo. The result was a symmetrical icon that could work on its own and be integrated into the products to further emphasize the brand.

Lastly, the typography. For the full logo, which had to include the name of the company, we considered luxury, modern serif fonts with thin lines and charismatic letter shapes that could work well with a sans-serif font, essential for a company selling exclusively online. Having all those elements decided upon, the winner was Bigilla with some slight adjustments.

And after a few weeks of work alongside the company’s owner, Dra. Work Kloset’s brand elements came to life and the business personality started to take its first steps into the world. As part of the brand strategy were guidelines put together in a brand book on how to implement the logo and brand image into packaging, thank you cards, website, social media, product photography, and overall online communication to ensure future clients felt the luxury and exclusivity of the brand to make them feel special, unique and elegant in their workplace.

What is included in my branding service?

The answer to that question is: depends. Because every business is different and has specific characteristics, a branding service has to adapt to its needs and goals. I offer a personalized service and include only what I think it’s essential for the brand to reach its full potential.

What could be essential? If you have a modern and minimalist burger restaurant I will include a menu design or if you have an online consultancy firm I will include a website and email signatures to give a few examples. Other assets could be:

  • Social media templates

  • Website

  • Creative direction for product photography and videos

  • Branded patterns

  • Printed media templates

  • Email marketing templates

  • And basically anything that communicates your brand to your audience efficiently

All of these assets would be discussed during our first call and properly explained in your personalized budget proposal beforehand so you always know what to expect. But I also offer design packages to help you make a decision -and know the overall price you could expect!
